Here’s a quick strategy discussion to help you improve SAT score in a short span.

The new SAT is quite a different animal compared to the old one.
Some predominant changes:

– No more annoying vocabulary (yeay!)
– All Verbal questions are Passage based (ouch!)
– Math is more ‘application’ based rather than concept retention based (another yeay)

There is a bunch of preparation materials out there. But if you want to see considerably improve SAT score, you need to understand how to strategize your approach on each question type to improve accuracy and speed.

  1. Take periodic full length (proctored) tests, You can printout a free full-length test here.
  2. Every week, plan to spend an hour (English on alternate days and Math on others) practicing and half an hour reviewing those questions.
  3. Become familiar with recurring patterns and how to use them to your advantage.
    For Example: Each passage type follows a predictable flow, with only certain things that tend to be important to the central idea. Becoming proficient at identifying these will help improve your scores.

  5. Work on your vocabulary.  Though it isn’t tested explicitly, having a strong vocabulary can get you out of sticky situations on the SAT – quickly!
