GRE or GMAT? Which should I choose?

The question of whether you should take the GRE or GMAT can be a very puzzling one. These are both standardized tests aimed at students who want to pursue a masters abroad (specifically USA). What makes this more challenging is that the GRE is also accepted at most B-schools for their MBA programs.

So which one is right for you? This article will dive into the differences (and similarities) of these tests to help you understand which of these tests you should be preparing for and writing. 

To understand the test that’s best for you it’s important to not get distracted by discussions on which is “more difficult”, since difficulty is extremely subjective. What matters more is the applicability of each test to what you want to pursue. Short answer: do you want to pursue and MBA or do you want to pursue a Master’s specialization? The following evaluation points will help better understand which test (and program) best suits your need.

In short, the real question you need to be asking is “which test is suitable for me?”.

So GRE or GMAT ?

If it’s an MBA you wish to pursue, then unequivocally you MUST take the GMAT.

Though Business schools accept GRE scores, admission committees view the GMAT as a much better metric for selecting the right candidate. This is so because the GMAT is designed specifically to gauge competencies related to decision making processes that are required in good business administrators! The GRE is more of a generic yardstick for eliminating candidates!

If, on the other hand, you are looking at a Masters in anything other than business administration,
then the GRE is the test to take!
