GRE

What makes GRE hard ?

Is the GRE hard ?

Many find the GRE hard, but few really understand why! This article will educate you on what makes the GRE hard and how you can strategise your preparation to get better scores.

Here are some things that make the GRE hard.

  1. It is a 4 hour long test
  2. GRE requires you to be ‘zoned in’ through the entire test (can’t take a quick nap or zone out for a few minutes – you just don’t have the time).
  3. A time sensitive test: you have about a minute and a half for each question and getting as many correct is important – so time management and the ability to prioritise are essential skills.
  4. A Stressful experience – refer points 1 to 3, those by themselves will add to insane stress levels. Add to that performance anxiety, physiological stress etc.. You get the picture!
  5. The Verbal section tests insane vocabulary and it tests it in context: which means that “mugging up” words DOES NOT work and you’ll need to learn a large volume of complex words contextually to do well!
  6. Questions and Answers are created by psychometrists, which means they are designed to trap you into selecting answers that “sound right” but aren’t! Strategic thinking and following a very methodical approach is the ONLY way to avoid these cognitive traps! This unfortunates cannot be “prepared for” last minute. These need to be built into you as a habit – through consistent practice. Ideally over a 2 – 3 month period.

But there’s good news…

  1. Apart from Vocabulary, GRE is devoid of “theory”
  2. It is a predominantly strategy and critical reasoning based test. These skills are easy to learn when approached properly.
  3. It doesn’t take too much time to prepare for like the CAT or GATE. You’ll be able to reach peak scores in about 2–3 months of consistent, systematic prep because the GRE is a strategy based test.
  4. The GRE is a standardised test, which means that the “syllabus” is set! Even the WAY in which questions will be created and the WAY in which options will be RIGHT or WRONG is predictable!

So if you can prepare keeping these in mind, focusing on Strategy and consistent vocabulary building, then you’re likely to see substantial score improvements in a reasonably short time! For example a lot of my students come in with a score of 290–295, with our prep program they quickly scale up to a 320+ score range in 2 months or less!
